Since May 2025, a reformed European Union Design Regulation is in force, replacing the previously valid so-called Community Design Regulation. Besides other terminological changes, some substantive changes have been implemented. For example, the new regulation allows animations to be protected as a design. Also, for example, the scope of the exclusive rights conferred by a design is explicitly extended to 3D printing, i.e. creating, downloading, copying and sharing or distributing any medium or software which records the design will infringe a design. In addition, a design notice system is introduced, which allows design holders to mark their products with the design notice symbol “Ⓓ”.
