The German Patent and Trademark Office published the annual report 2025, highlighting growth across all major IP rights.
Most notably, the GPTO recorded a significant increase in utility model applications (+19.3%) and trademark filings (+19.8%). The number of patent applications also increased (+4.7%). The growth in utility models is primarily attributable to a sharp rise in applications filed by individuals (+46%). For trademarks, a significant increase in applications from China (+200%) and the United States (+100%) was observed, particularly in the areas of computer software and hardware.
According to the GPTO, the average examination time for patents until grant is currently 3.1 years. For trademarks, registration takes place on average within 2.9 months – and for fast‑track applications, within 1.2 months.
